PDT is a non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment which is primarily used for skin rejuvenation and early skin cancers.
PDT has been shown to be extremely successful both therapeutically and cosmetically. What is involved in the treatment? To start, a medication called 5-ALA (Topical 5- Aminolevulinic Acid) is applied to the skin for a specified time. Only abnormal skin cells and bacteria selectively absorb the ALA. After a short period of time, the skin is then exposed to Blue and Red lights which activate the 5-ALA. This results in the destruction of abnormal cells, which are in turn replaced by normal skin cells. During treatment, the areas of your skin that have actinic keratoses will probably look and feel irritated. This is typical and should not cause you any concern. Some redness, crusting and peeling will occur during the treatment which are signs that the abnormal cells are being eliminated. How many treatments will I need?1 - 3 treatments on a weekly or monthly basis may be required.
